I absolutely love a good face mask. Every Sunday night, I use a clarifying face mask so I can start off my week with a fresh face. I use sleeping masks on the regular. I was on the Glow Recipe wait list for their watermelon sleeping mask. I’ve used the 24K gold Peter Thomas Roth mask. Name a mask and I’ve probably tried them all! I was super excited to test out the new CO2Lift mask a once a month mask, that will give you that dewy look (that lasts for 3 weeks)!
I know you’re thinking how can a mask give you results that lasts for 3 weeks. Guys, I swear by this mask! I did a little research because I was truly intrigued. First, this mask is scientifically backed up by the Bohr Effect. Sound familiar? Here’s a refresher, hemoglobin’s oxygen binding affinity is inversely related both to acidity and to the concentration of carbon dioxide. So an increase in blood CO2 concentration will result in hemoglobin proteins releasing their loads of oxygen. The ingenious idea of using carbon dioxide to promote the transfer of oxygen within the human body, to treat an area where carbon dioxide is present i.e. the face, neck and hands, was made famous by the Danish physiologist Christian Bohr.
The initial uses in Europe were used as an injection (ouch! Beauty is pain I guess). The purpose of using this treatment as an injection was specifically designed to create a natural vasodilator. This will cause the blood vessels to widen for the improvement of blood flow and as a result increase the transport of oxygen to various tissues for cellular regeneration as well as act as an anti-inflammatory. With the years of successful studies and results in Europe, Japan took the treatment’s principle a step further in enabling the same powerful results, but without the use of injections and instead using masks. This non-injectable treatment was originally created in Japan for the use at hospitals to treat burn victims and for wound healing due to its physiological effects. For each successful outcome reported, several patients with burns or wounds to the face, neck or hands began to notice additional beneficial effects from this treatment. The results were astonishing. Not only did the patient’s primary wounds and burns heal, the patients visually experienced improvements to the texture and firmness of their skin. In addition, patients experienced reduction in fine lines and wrinkles, reduction in the size of their pores, as well as a more firm and lifted appearance to their face. #Winning.
So how does it work on your skin?

The addition of carbon-dioxide (AKA the mask) being delivered into your blood stream will promote the occurrence of vasodilation. As a result, this will increase the metabolism efficiency of your cells and improve the discharge of waste from your skin.
The improvement in discharge of waste from your skin will reduce the inflammation which is a usual cause of such skin problems including acne, dryness, and water-retention. With the increased oxygen delivery to the skin being treated, the treated area will effectively fight off several forms of bacteria that attacks your skin on a daily basis. This mask is great for people who live in cities where air quality is poor.
When carbon-dioxide gets absorbed into your blood stream, it will produce dioxide which will improve your blood circulation. With the improvement of blood circulation and the efficient discharge of waste from your skin, you will experience an overall brightness and radiance to your face and neck. Those with freckles and brown spots will also experience improvement in lightness to their skin tone.
