It’s summer here in NYC, and it’s hot AF. You know what that means? It’s that time of year, where your sweat your makeup off and your skin breaks out like crazy. Pores are super clogged with sweat and makeup. To ensure all makeup is taken off and I’m focusing on skincare I’ve decided to do a shortened version of the famous Korean 10+-step face care regimen. (I’m trying to do this every night for a month, so I will be creating a blog post soon!). But all these skincare regimens and products in store and online say I need to use an essence AND a serum. You can think of toners and essences as prep before the main treatment: serum, an ultra concentrated essence designed to target your skin concern, whether that’s dark spots, large pores, wrinkles or acne.
Ummm what’s the difference between an essence and serum?
I’ve bought a few essences and they don’t seem any different from serums. So after researching, I finally found my answer. Essences traditionally were more lightweight and less concentrated than serums, and were used after a toner to add another layer of hydration before you applied serums.
So why use essences?
They aid in cell turnover, leading to smoother texture over time, provide the skin with nourishing vitamins.
How do you use essences?
For best absorption, essences should be patted on the skin with your hands.
And there you have it. That’s the difference between an essence and serum. They’re essentially (ha, pun intended) similar but very different. Which essence do I use? Of course the holy grail, SK II’s Facial Treatment Essence (duh!)
